China's top-secret spaceplane can't hide in low-Earth orbit
A winged Chinese spacecraft bearing a strong resemblance to the US military's X-37B spaceplane was photographed in orbit by a passing US-owned commercial satellite in 2024, and we finally have the image. The Chinese spaceplane has delta wings, payload bay doors, a dark heat shield, and a rear-mounted service module with power-generating solar arrays. In other words, the design of the winged ship is, to a great degree, a copy of the X-37B spaceplane flown by the US Space Force. The photo was taken by a commercial imaging satellite owned by a company called Vantor, known as Maxar in 2024.

In July, Cathedral closed a $160 million funding round that valued the company at $1.4 billion,

A theory of noisy linear recurrent neural network learning dynamics
Biological neural networks are noisy: their dynamics involve difficult-to-predict fluctuations which are likely due not just to chaos, but also to a variety of low-level biophysical processes. Despite the omnipresence of intrinsic noise, its theoretical consequences are incompletely understood, especially in the context of learning. For example, does noise meaningfully shape representation learning, or is it better viewed as a nuisance factor whose presence or absence changes little about what s

Code-execution flaw in UEFI firmware threatens most servers on planet Earth
Defenders across the world face the burden of responding to yet another botched code-execution vulnerability, this time in boot-time firmware used by most of the world’s server vendors and data centers. Information-theoretic entropy imaging of quantum matter
Phase transitions can generate intricate spatial organization invisible to spatially averaged probes, yet quantitative measures of this organization remain limited. Here we develop "entropy imaging," an information-theoretic technique that harnesses lossless compression to quantify spatial complexity, predictability, and order in quantum materials. Using this approach, emergent spatial textures can be imaged and converted into an experimentally-accessible observable: the computable information d
