The Trolley Problem Tests What Makes Harm Wrong

A runaway trolley will kill five people unless you divert it onto another track where one person will die. The puzzle changes when the scenario becomes more personal, such as physically pushing someone to stop the trolley. Many people judge these versions differently even when the arithmetic is similar. Philosophers use that tension to test whether morality depends on consequences, intentions, rights, personal involvement or rules against using someone as a means. The value is not one correct answer, but the fault lines the thought experiment exposes.
